Aged 20

Killed in Action on Wednesday, 1st November 1916

Alfred Steven Warren was born in Burwell (Newmarket Q2-1896 3B:524), son of Stephen and Matilda WARREN (née REEVE).

1901 census...Aged 4, he was a Newnham, Burwell with his father Stephen WARREN [38] labourer; his mother Matilda [33] born Fordham; Sisters Elizabeth [10], Ellen [7] and Lily [3]; brother Walter [9]. All except his mother were born in Burwell.

1911 census...Aged 14, labourer/house boy, he was at Bedlam Square, Burwell, with his widower father, sister Elizabeth, brother Walter and sister Mary Ann [8] born Burwell.
His mother had died in 1902 also two siblings.

He enlisted in Newmarket, initially in the 23rd (1st Sportsman's) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, a Territorial Force before being moved to the regular 7th (Extra Reserve) Battalion.
The battalion were in the Butte de Warlencourt area at SNAG TRENCH, which the South Africans had taken earlier. The war diary read:-
31st October - Relieved 4th Northumberland Fusiliers in front line. SNAG and ABBAYE Trenches, very wet, Communication Trenches nearly impassable.
1st November SNAG TRENCH - Snag trench held by A and D Coys, 100 yds on each side of Pioneer Alley, with half of C Coy. in Abbaye Trench. Remainder of C and whole of B Coys in Flers Line. Conditions very bad, mud and water waist deep in places.

The weather seemed to give them more trouble than the Germans as they lost just 3 men on the 1st November.
